Colonial Experiments with Sanskrit Knowledge Traditions: A Case Study of Calcutta Sanskrit College
Abstract
The beginning of the Calcutta Sanskrit College can be traced to the first half of the nineteenth century. In the course of time, it was transformed into an institution of eminence in the field of Sanskrit learning,manifested in the transformation of college into the Sanskrit College and University by the Government of West Bengal vide the Legislative Act XXXIII of 2015 and its functioning from 15 June 2016.This paper is an attempt to look at developments related to Sanskrit education in the colonial period and also highlight the utility of this education for indigenous stakeholders and the British administrators, and therefore, it is necessary to go into the details of its history.
